This year, my public transport costs have risen by 14% – frankly I find this quite shocking given the fact that the price of both petrol and diesel has gone down! Bus prices in my area have gone up by 6.3% for bus tickets, whilst metro train fares have increased by 7.7%. These might not sound like a great deal, but it could work out at more than £70 extra per year.
Perhaps what is most disappointing about this is the fact that the cost rises don’t seem to be at all justified. You still experience the same uncomfortable journey, the same (occasionally rude) drivers and the unacceptable overcrowding. Just what is this 14% rise in costs going toward paying?
The government keeps making a (largely sensible) case for us using public transport more. Yet the fact remains that until the prices are justified by an increased service level (such as buses running on time) then I will continue to begrudge using public transport.
