The BBC is reporting the tragic news that a child has been killed in a collision and seemingly struck by a tablet computer to her head. We at Car Articles are of course greatly saddened by the news and our thoughts go out to the family affected by the awful loss. The report indicates that the child was in an appropriate child seat restraint and the collision involved a school bus, in Vilanova de Arousa – a town in Spain.
It appears that a tablet computer being used by the child, which was not anchored to the interior of the car, may have struck the child in the head. Whilst it is widely being indicated that this is a ‘freak accident’, it is worth bearing in mind that any loose item in a car can become a projectile capable of causing injury to a person. The heavier (or pointed/sharp nature) of the object, the greater the risk. Where possible, consideration should be given to anchoring or using fixing points to prevent items flying loose under sudden acceleration/deceleration.
As always, our advice is to drive safely, carefully and with consideration to others – including any passengers you may have.
