It was with some sadness that I heard McLaren was no longer going to manufacture the McLaren 12C (or as it used to be known the McLaren MP4-12C). Weird monikers aside, the 12C had everything you could ever wish for from a supercar. The only criticism that seemed to hold any weight when leveled at this marvel of engineering was that it lacked the ‘soul’ of the rival it was squarely aimed at – the Ferrari 458 Italia.
The car directly replacing the 12C is this. The McLaren 650S. Lighter, more powerful and allegedly more agile than the 12C, it takes some of the design cues from the McLaren P1 hypercar to offer something truly special. But how good is the whole package?
