GEM Motoring Assist Offers Advice On Assisting Emergency Vehicles

May 19, 2015 by Mr Butterscotch Leave a Comment

Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is calling on all road users, including pedestrians, to ensure they do everything possible to assist emergency vehicles on blue light journeys.

The advice follows the sacking today Friday 15th May 2015 for gross misconduct of a school crossing patrol ‘lollipop man’ in Luton, who ignored a fire engine’s sirens and blocked its progress by repeatedly ushering parents and children across the road.

GEM chief executive David Williams MBE said: “School crossing patrols do a fantastic job for road safety, year-round and in all weathers, but deliberately holding up any emergency vehicle is a foolish and very selfish act that could put lives at risk. Common sense should prevail when approaching sirens can be heard, and crossing patrols are trained not to go onto the road in these situations.”

GEM’s video, Blue Light Aware, offers advice for all road users on how stay safe and legal, while assisting an emergency vehicle on a blue light journey. Please visit www.bluelightaware.org.uk.
