There are some particularly vicious pot holes in my local area – the sort that will fling you off a push bike, sending you careering into opposing traffic on a motorbike or throw you toward the pavement if your wheel clips it in your car. Unhappy? I certainly am – given the amount of duty and VAT that is paid on petrol (as well as road tax) it’s laughable that the government can’t ensure roads are up to standard.
It seems that my thoughts are backed up by a lot of you too, judging by the survey conducted by the Institution of Civil Engineers. You can read the rest of the article regarding the survey at MSN cars.

March 29, 2010 at 12:07 pmWe have seen an increase this winter of bent wheels, unseated tyres, broken suspension all because of these pot holes.
One thing I have noticed is when they used to patch road they would always put raw tar around the patch to stop ingress of water. Not no more. This seems to allow water underneath the Tarmac.

March 29, 2010 at 10:14 pmHave to agree with that Rusty. The water thing is very interesting too, I had noticed something different, but couldn’t put my finger on what it was, but I think you’re right. The same patches of road have been repaired 2 or 3 times in the last year in my area, as every time they repair it, it just seems to crumble away again. They even ended up redoing a whole road as it got so bad!
