The new 2012 Toyota Prius a reworked version of a face-lifted car which is now actually quite old. None the less it’s a hybrid and the Eco nut jobs like a hybrid almost as much as us petrol heads like v8’s. See the problem is at some point someone – god only knows who probably Toyota – made the world believe that the car is an evil machine with 666 tattooed on it’s boot! But the truth of the matter is the amount of green house gases output by the car is just 3%. yes 3%, of all the worlds green houses gases. Cows put out more green houses gases than the car, in-fact methane which comes out of cows back sides is 10x more damaging than the carbon dioxide that comes out of your car. So by buying a Prius for economy alone is just madness after all it will do a very good but not amazing 70mpg but the much prettier Fiat 500 will do 68mpg, the Polo Blue Motion will do 80mpg and even a bog standard BMW 116 will do 62mpg which is in every way a better car than the Prius. All the above cars are also a lot cheaper which is what economy is all about isn’t it?
So this Eco car isn’t very economical at all and very costly when lined up with other cars and to be honest normal ones at that, so I guess then we must look at it as just a car and not a Marvel of engineering. There’s an issue here as well though because it’s really very dull, the interior was styled by someone who is possibly the dullest man in the world. It’s functional though and the steering wheel looks nice. Centre speedo instruments – what is this about who is driving the car the person sat in that back? why does my passenger need to know how much fuel we have left? I know it saves money when making a car in left and right hand drive but I’m sorry I just don’t like it! At least if you do buy a Prius the Eco nut jobs will think your saving the planet so it won’t get keyed, only you won’t be, you’d be better off shooting some cows at least then you could have steak for tea!

April 10, 2012 at 3:10 pmThe Prius is accepted as being generally uninspiring; however it did pretty much kick off the whole eco/better fuel economy thing.
I think my money would be on the Fiat 500 as a car of choice for economy.
