Unfortunately, my driving experiment was drawn to an abrupt close fairly recently, through no fault of my own. In a rather unexpected turn of events, I got in my car as per usual only to find that the thing wouldn’t start.
A swift call to the RAC brought the man in the orange van out and he informed me that what had happened was the engine was flooded. As modern cars don’t have a choke to play with (it’s all automatic), it’s possible that this occurred due to turning the car engine over then turning it off again.
Luckily, a good run of the car meant that there was no damage and it has run smoothly ever since. A good few minutes of idling and some revving from the RAC man to ensure that everything was fine meant that the experiment came to a very quick close.
So, what now? Well, I’m back to my usual diving style – progressive but not aggressive – but not aiming to save the planet and reach galactic miles in my car either. I’ll revisit the experiment in the future I’m sure, though I hope that it’ll be in a different car. Maybe to see if I can push an M3 or Impreza WRX up to 35mpg!
