Well, I’ve finally managed to see the new series of Top Gear. Like most people, I have mixed feelings about it. Whether you loved or loathed Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, they were Top Gear. Removing the three lads from the show but keeping the same formula seemed like a strange decision for some. However, in the main it appears to have worked. Here’s a few things we liked from the show:
- Chris Evans is hugely enthusiastic
- Matt LeBlanc is very charismatic
- The outstanding cinematography/photography remains a big part of the show
- Cars remain the absolute star
- Humour is still injected at every opportunity
- The Stig made an appearance
Not all of it hit the right note with us though, and not just because of the presenter change. Here are the things that we did not enjoy as much as previously:
- The dynamic between presenters doesn’t yet seem quite right
- The ‘stars in the reasonably priced car’ segment has been increased in length – apparently to appeal to a US audience! I’ll point out that America already has their own Top Gear
- The first episode was very energetic and lively – whether they can keep this up will remain to be seen
- Chris Evans’ presentation style may grate after some time
Overall, a light entertainment show on TV that features cars is never a bad thing. We’re really looking forward to seeing the other presenters also getting some of the limelight. Nonetheless, we just are not convinced yet that the headline presenters offer the right mix. Only time will tell as to how it goes from here – but definitely a positive so far. Keep up the good work guys.
